Your questions, our answers

What is a PORTABLE HOIST and what is it used for?

A portable hoist is a lifting device designed to raise and lower heavy loads vertically, while being easy to transport and usable in different work sites or environments.

It is distinguished by its great flexibility, quick installation, and ability to operate without fixed equipment, making it a highly effective solution for lifting in a variety of locations, including confined spaces or areas without access to electricity (depending on the model).

What are the two main types of manual PORTABLE HOISTS?

Portable manual hoists are mainly available in two main versions:

  • Manual chain hoist (endless chain/maneuvering chain)
  • Lever hoist (manual lever hoist/puller)
What is the difference between rated capacity and test load?
  • Nominal capacity (WLL: Working Load Limit):
This is the maximum load that the hoist can safely lift under normal use. It is expressed in kg or tons (e.g., 500 kg, 1 t, 5 t).
  • Test load:
This is a load higher than the WLL, used only to test and validate the strength and safety of the hoist during testing or certification.

Important :
The test load must never be used in regular operation.

What are the inspection requirements in Quebec for a PORTABLE HOIST (according to the CNESST)?

In Quebec, portable hoists must undergo regular checks and inspections to ensure worker safety, in accordance with applicable workplace requirements.

In practice, the following is generally recommended:

  • A visual inspection before use (chain/cable, hook, brake, general operation)

  • Periodic inspections depending on frequency of use and environment (dust, humidity, heavy use)

  • Periodic inspections depending on frequency of use and environment (dust, humidity, heavy use)
