Your questions, our answers
How should fats and oils be managed (in restaurants)?
Grease is the “poison” of commercial septic systems.
The grease trap: Is it mandatory? Yes, and it must be emptied much more often than the tank (often every 1 to 4 months).
The problem: If grease reaches the treatment system (such as a Filtro-Flex), it clogs the filter media and makes it impermeable.
Which cleaning products are prohibited?
In offices and businesses, industrial cleaning products that are more powerful than those used at home are often used. The danger: Disinfectants (quaternary ammonium, high doses of chlorine) kill bacteria in the septic tank. Without bacteria, there is no treatment. Keep an eye out: Floor cleaning products and chlorine tablets in urinals are common causes of bacterial flora “death.”
What is the legal frequency for emptying?
In Quebec, regulations (Q-2, r.2) are strict, but commercial use has specific requirements: Permanent use: Generally every 2 years. Seasonal use: Every 4 years. However: Depending on the load (e.g., busy restaurant), annual emptying is often necessary to protect the investment in the septic field.
